How do you clean a "Montana Silver" belt buckle?

I used to show horses 15 years ago, and I have a Montana Silver belt buckle. Back then my horse trainer told me that you can't clean Montana Silver with any cleaners/polishes, if it tarnishes you have to send it to them because you'll mess up the finish if you do. Is this true?
