Can I wear just one multi focal contact lens?

I've only been "test driving" them for three days, but they make my distance vision very bad. When taking them out today, I realized I can see beautifully both near and far with only the left lens in my eye. I can tell my optometrist is not a multi focal contact fan, but I've paid this place a lot of money already. I really want this to work. I have a follow up appt. next week. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
